Start with the assessment

Look for care from a doctor or another licensed health professional. The visit may be in person or by telehealth. Telehealth means care by phone, video or another remote connection.

Make the first question about your goal and health history. Ask what the visit covers and whether a prescription decision follows a full assessment.

If a visit in person fits your needs

Ask an in-person practice whether it assesses the condition you want to discuss. Ask who conducts the visit. Before paying, find out whether the quoted fee covers the assessment or a treatment package.

For a med spa, a business offering medical treatments in a spa setting, ask who is responsible for the medical care.

As of September 2026, Illinois agency guidance treats weight-loss injections at med spas as medical procedures, done by a doctor or under a doctor’s delegation.

Delegation means handing a task to someone trained and supervised; it does not turn the task into beauty care.

If care over a screen fits your day

Ask how the visit works. Is there a live conversation? Can you ask questions? If more information is needed, how will the person treating you get it?

Illinois law applies the in-person care standard to remote visits, as recorded in September 2026. The person treating you may only do work allowed by their licence.

As of September 2026, treating a patient in Illinois by telehealth requires an Illinois licence or other permission from the state.

Tell the service where you expect to be when the visit takes place. If you plan to travel, ask about that before setting it up.

Ask how follow-up will happen

Find out who answers after the visit. Ask whether follow-up is included. Ask what happens if an examination in a room is needed.

Ask the person who will see you for their full name. Use that name to check their Illinois licence.
